Castellorizo Association of Western Australia to receive $10,000 for sharing Centenary with Commonwealth Bank

22/03/12

Commonwealth Bank Celebrates its Centenary with Community

Organisations around Australia

In celebration of its Centenary year, Commonwealth Bank has announced it will be distributing $100,000 amongst ten community organisations around Australia also celebrating 100 years.

The Castellorizo Association of Western Australia is one of the ten organisations that will be presented with a congratulatory Centenary grant of $10,000. The organisation was the first Greek regional fraternity to have been formed anywhere in Australia and not only catered for the social and cultural needs of Castellorizians, but also exhibited a private and public concern for all Greeks in Western Australia.

Commonwealth Bank was born through an Act of Parliament in December 1911 and in July 1912, the first branch opened to the public in Melbourne. Castellorizo Association of Western

Australia was founded in 1912, which makes it eligible for this grant.

Jim Manifis from Castellorizo Association of Western Australia is thrilled with the surprise contribution from the Bank. He said:

“Our association plans to use the Commonwealth Bank grant to fund our own Centenary celebrations planned for May 2012. The celebrations will include a conference, which will provide a great opportunity for Castellorizians in Australia to share their stories and discuss the past, present and future of the association.”

This celebration of fellow 100-year organisations is part of the Bank’s Centenary Staff Giving

Back initiative. Staff Giving Back enabled Commonwealth Bank staff to make suggestions on how they thought the Bank could make a difference to the lives of Australians.

Ideas flooded in ranging from the grand to the grassroots, from the national to the local, and a total of ten ideas were finally chosen. Throughout Commonwealth Bank’s Centenary period (from October 2011 until July 2012), the Bank will implement ten staff suggested concepts.

The idea to provide a special grant to community organisations that share their Centenary with

Commonwealth Bank was put forward by staff members, Neville Hughes and Rachel Gamble.

Commonwealth Bank CEO, Ian Narev, said, “The Centenary Staff Giving Back program is an important initiative because it enabled our staff to put forward ideas that they believe will have an impact on communities in which they live. This idea immediately stood out as it provides an opportunity to congratulate these very worthy, and yet also humble, community organisations in reaching this remarkable milestone.”
